Choosing now, in respect of later.
Something we have naturally moved towards in our house is spending our money as locally and/or as small as possible. It's almost 1.5 years now since we've spent more than $5 at a Woolworths or Coles (large chain supermarkets); as for that $5 spend, it was late and we needed some TP 😂 That's about all they're good for.
What started as a simple question on what we were doing supporting these models, has become a routine that is surprisingly easy to continue.
WHAT IS THE BROKEN MODEL?
Price manipulation at the cost of the farmers, huge investments in the oil and unsustainable energy industry; ownership of the lion's share of poker machines in Australia - to name just a few.
IS THERE ANOTHER OPTION?
We buy our produce from the local farmers market or organic food groups; when we miss our window for the best local choices our backup is a primarily conventional producer that supports the farmers.
NOW, AND LATER
As the cost (environmentally and financially) of supporting unsustainable business models grows ten-fold over the next few decades, things will - things must, shift. So it has made sense to us to vote with our $s now and support business models that will give our children's children a chance at a livable planet.
I am, as most are, complicit in the problems as well, how many of us get a new phone every 2-3 years? Some even sooner! Even those who try to hold out are usually met with a system that is designed against them. The tech is moving fast, that is an unavoidable truth, but what will the absolute cost be if we continue this way for another 20+ years?
It has always seemed alarming to us how much focus there is on wealth creation; often with blinders to the means. Resources, including money, are of course important, they allow freedom of choices and time. But primary must be the value offered, value in the now, and perhaps value for those who will be born in 2050.
WHAT DOES A ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS HIGHLIGHT?
How did these models even come into existence?
A search for security external to ourselves is a dangerous and addictive road. It is the primary condition of our history so far. It is, however, a fairly easy pattern to break and it doesn't (have to) involve wearing crystals and bathing in nag champa.
Perhaps a good analogy is that of a toddler falling over, scraping a knee and crying to the high heavens. There was an assault, by gravity, and the pavement; there was pain. Now, it would be illogical to take this occurrence of pain, and the fear associated with that pain, and attempt to construct a world that avoids scraped knees, at all costs.
Yet, have we not done this with the little 'I' in our heads? There's an assault, by something changing, so we attempt to build a fortress to protect us from the fear of change. This expresses itself in the blind pursuit of money and status while destroying the environment that allows money to even be a thing.
TO BE REMEMBERED IN ADMIRATION
It is simple logic, applied with awareness moment to moment. Change is inevitable, everything is constantly in flux; growing and dying - growing and dying. Everything we have created could cease to exist in an instant, that is in the realm of possibility within an infinitely expanding and changing cosmos. So, let's embrace this.
Let's meditate on this, however that looks for you; do this frequently as a constant check-in. Be expansive, compassionate and logical in this process. Indeed shelter and security are needed in a physical sense. Without it, mental and physical stresses are ten fold. But ultimately, clinging to anything external for security only ends in pain.
We can embrace the flux and face it with courage; work with the structure we currently have, but avoid falling asleep to the absurdity of it all. There's nothing very esoteric about this concept. It is really is as pragmatic and logical as it comes.
If we start small, and too, be logical. Seek security within, by expanding in all of the wonderment that exists beyond the little 'I'.
Our natural state is one of support, for all of the potential assaults that exist within our physical environment, it is still supporting of life; we did not spontaneously zap into existence on Mars - very little support for us there.
If we support the environment that supports us we have an incredible chance at evolving internally and externally as one.
Maybe then, from this place, the next step can be an effortless choice of supporting business models that are in alignment with a sustainable future. If nothing else, it's pretty cool to know your money is going directly to small businesses and their families. And it is often much more, and much bigger than this 🙏
