As we move towards the end of the week I want to talk briefly on mental well-being and a few things I do to help my body nourish my mind.
Green tea is one of the only easily available sources of the amino acid L-Theanine. This amino acid is able to cross the blood brain barrier whilst remaining intact and activate your GABA, dopamine and serotonin receptors. The result is a sense of calm, peace and relaxation. This axiolytic compound is one of the reasons some caffeine sensitive people are able to tolerate green tea over coffee.
I supplement L-Theanine and have had great results with this fairly inexpensive supplement. In addition to providing a noticeable reduction in anxiety through interaction with receptors responsible for our mood, it also suppresses glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, stress hormones, interfere with serotonin and dopamine function and have also been shown to shrink the brain. Glutamate levels are high in people with depression and anxiety; L-Theanine acts as a glutamate antagonist.
L-Theanine also restores liver function by regenerating the bodies antioxidant and detoxifier glutathione. Anyone who consumes alcohol regularly may see benefits to more l-theanine in their diet.
Ultimately if we can help assist the body to maintain the fragile balance of hormones through diet, exercise and mindfulness; my experience has shown life can be completely transformed.
